Sounding remarkably like American liberals and journalists at the time – not to be redundant – last week’s episode of FX’s The Americans set in the early 1980s (a new episode runs tonight), included a scene in which a KGB operative, working in the United States, sputtered in disgust at President Ronald Reagan on her TV: “Look at him. He’ll do anything. He doesn’t care. Kids, nuns, journalists -- he doesn’t care.”

That came from “Elizabeth Jennings,” played by Keri Russell, as she watched Reagan speak on TV, a speech I figured out was delivered at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) dinner held at the Mayflower hotel on Friday, February 26, 1982.

Hayes, however, lamented that the fuel he believes needs to stay in the ground is worth about $20 trillion, a pricey sum to leave untapped. He laid out the problem for his viewers, as he saw it:

  111. Barbara Walters Gushes Over Elizabeth Warren: 'I Can See You Running for President'

With only weeks left before she retires, View co-host Barbara Walters on Wednesday found time to fawn over another liberal Democrat. She becomes a Harvard Law professor, a congressional advisor, and then the first female senator in the history of Massachusetts."

The host blurbed, "...Could her next move be the White House?" This was a topic Walter kept coming back to. Regarding a 2016 bid, she wondered, "What about the future? In the back of your mind, do you think maybe?" The journalist insisted that "some" are calling her "the future president" and "Hillary Clinton's nightmare." [See video below. MP3 audio here.]

  112. New Home Sales Dive in March, Miss Expectations by Miles; Result Is 'Unexpectedly' 'Surprising'

    NewsBusters blogs | 23 Apr 2014 | 1:44 pm MDT

March was going to be the month when new home sales in the U.S. would finally break out after several months of horrible weather. After all, everyone knew that this winter's snow, ice, and low temperatures were the only things holding the new home market back. Consensus predictions ahead of today's related report from the Census Bureau were in the range of 450,000 to 455,000 annualized sales.

Oops. New home sales dove to a seasonally adjusted annualized 384,000, a 14.5 percent decline from February, a slightly larger miss compared to expectations, and a whopping 13.3 percent lower than March 2013. Press reports on this result predictably brought on appearances of the U-word ("unexpectedly"), with at least one interesting twist.

I've been out and about on TV and radio these last few days. Herewith, a few highlights: ~I started this morning with Bruce & Dan on 89 WLS in Chicago. When I was living in the Windy City covering the trial of my old boss Conrad Black, I got used to waking up with WLS and the late Don Wade. I miss Don and certainly neither Bruce nor Dan is as lovely as Roma, but their show is always fun to do. We talked about affirmative action, the paramilitarized bureaucracy, and, for some reason, Peter Pan. You can hear the interview here. ~Last night, I was on Fox News talking climate alarmism with Sean Hannity. You can see the video here. One of the points I raised with Sean is: Where has the warming gone? If you're entering college this fall, there's been no warming your entire life, so, after years of deniers pointing out this awkward fact, the settled-science crowd have belatedly tried to explain the 17-year "pause". Their preferred answer is that the 21st century warming is hiding somewhere - most likely in the depths of the Pacific, next to that Malaysian plane. This may buy the climate mullahs a little time, but not much...

  144. Tea For Two

    SteynOnline | 21 Apr 2014 | 8:00 am MDT

One of the biggest pop standards of the 20th century celebrates its 90th birthday this month. Exactly nine decades ago - April 21st 1924 - a new musical comedy opened in Chicago on its pre-Broadway tour. The plot was the usual fluff - three couples in Atlantic City, complications ensue, etc. It should have been a breeze, but it wasn't going well. The producer, having fired the director, had decided to direct it himself. His name was Harry Frazee. And, if you're not a camp old musical-comedy buff but that name nevertheless rings a bell, that's because, when he wasn't firing directors, he was selling baseball players: Harry Frazee was the Boston Red Sox owner who sold Babe Ruth to the Yankees and started that whole "Curse of the Bambino" thing, about which more later...

Today is the first Boston Marathon since last year's bombing. I write about the coverage in those first days here. A year on, the evasive passivity of the official observances is disturbing. ~Following the new eBook of my free-speech tome Lights Out, I'm pleased to announce that Passing Parade is now also available digitally. Only two months ago PJ Media's Ed Driscoll demanded: Please add Broadway Babies and Mark Steyn's Passing Parade to the Kindle titles! Ed's wish is my half-command...

  149. Trying To Be Perfect Could Be Ruining Your Health

    Sweetness & Light | 16 Apr 2014 | 9:48 am MDT

    From the UK’s Daily Mail:

Trying to be perfect could be ruining your health

It can trigger heart disease, IBS and insomnia – and some experts say it could even be as bad for you as smoking

    By Anna Magee | 14 April 2014

Perfectionism – setting yourself high standards at home or work – is seen as laudable. But research suggests it has a dark flipside, causing not just psychological stress as perfectionists feels the weight of pressure to be perfect, but physical harm – irritable bowel disease (IBS), insomnia, heart disease and even early death.

Experts such as Dr Danielle Molnar, a psychologist at Brock University, Canada, are suggesting perfectionism should be considered as a risk factor for disease in the same way as obesity and smoking.

  150. India ‘Recognizes’ Third Sex: Eunuch/Transgender

    Sweetness & Light | 16 Apr 2014 | 9:36 am MDT

    From the UK’s Telegraph:

India’s Supreme Court creates official third sex for eunuchs and transgenders

After two thousand years of persecution, India’s two million eunuchs to be formally recognised as third sex and listed as ‘backward’ caste entitled to reserved government jobs and university places

    By Dean Nelson | 15 April 2014

New Delhi – India’s Supreme Court has created an official third sex for its transgender eunuchs and announced they will have a quota of government jobs and college places to help them overcome discrimination…

"We are elated and thankful to the court," said Kalki Subramanium, a leading transgender rights activist. "The decision has come after a century of suppression and marginalisation by the legal and social systems…

India’s transgenders include those who feel they were born into the wrong sex, men born with deformed genitals and effeminate boys disowned by their families and sent to live in eunuch colonies.

  151. WWU Wants Fewer White People On Their Campus

    Sweetness & Light | 16 Apr 2014 | 9:25 am MDT

    From Campus Reform:

University calls the amount of white people on campus a ‘failure,’ asks for ideas on how to have fewer

    Kaitlyn Schallhorn | April 15, 2014

A school-wide questionnaire at Western Washington University (WWU) asked the community “How do we make sure that in future years ‘we are not as white as we are today?’”

Wouldn’t one solution be to do away with all-black colleges? Which should be illegal under our current laws, anyway.

The question, released through the communications and marketing [sic] department’s daily newsletter Western Today, comes on the heels of admonishments given in multiple convocation addresses by WWU President Bruce Shepard for the university’s “failure” to be less white.

“Every year, from this stage and at this time, you have heard me say that, if in decades ahead, we are as white as we are today, we will have failed as university,” Shepard said in the 2012 speech.

  152. Philly Will No Longer Honor ICE Detainer Requests

    Sweetness & Light | 16 Apr 2014 | 9:13 am MDT

    From a joyous Philadelphia Inquirer:

Mayor expected to sign order curtailing police-ICE collaboration

    BY JULIE SHAW | April 15, 2014

Mayor Nutter [sic] is expected to sign an executive order tomorrow that will significantly limit collaboration between Philadelphia police and federal immigration authorities.

The order is expected to preclude police from honoring detainer requests by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement except in cases where a person is convicted of a first- or second-degree felony involving violence, and only when ICE secures a warrant to support the detainer…

ICE detainers or "holds" are requests by federal immigration authorities for police to hold a person who was detained for an alleged crime for up to an additional 48 hours. That would allow ICE to take the person – if suspected of being an undocumented immigrant or a noncitizen – into their custody for possible deportation.

  153. Mayor De Blasio Ends NYC’s Monitoring Of Muslims

    Sweetness & Light | 16 Apr 2014 | 8:55 am MDT

    From the Associated Press:

New York police end Muslim surveillance program

By JAKE PEARSON and TOM HAYS | April 15, 2014

NEW YORK (AP) — A special New York Police Department unit that sparked controversy by tracking the daily lives of Muslims in an effort to detect terror threats has been disbanded, police officials said Tuesday.

How wonderful that this joyous news has come out on the one year anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombings! Which might have been prevented with more aggressive monitoring of the Boston ‘Muslim community.’

NYPD spokesman Stephen Davis confirmed that detectives assigned to the unit had been transferred to other duties within the department’s Intelligence Division.

Now that the NYPD no longer ‘stop and frisk,’ and no longer arrest anyone for drugs or loitering, you have to wonder why they need so many cops?
