• 1788 – A fire in New Orleans leaves most of the town in ruins.
• 1905 – Albert Einstein publishes his theory on special relativity.
• 1913 – Over 360 are killed and 20,000 homes destroyed in the Great Dayton Flood in Dayton, Ohio.
• 1928 – Charles Lindbergh is presented the Medal of Honor for flying an airplane from St. Louis to Paris in the first solo trans-Atlantic flight. — Before World War II, the MOH could be awarded for extraordinary acts by active or reserve service members made during peacetime as well as in combat. — During the 1930s, Lindbergh was a Hitler fan, especially the madman’s ideas on selective human breeding.
In the 1930s, Lindbergh was sent to Europe on a special mission to evaluate Germany’s growing air force strength but was brain-washed by German officials. He then warned the U.S. and Europe against attacking Hitler. Modern writers try to pass Lindberg’s conduct off as isolationism, or they use other mundane excuses to explain his pro-Hitler mutterings, but the fact remains that he was a political screwball who really believed in the supremacy of the white race. To his credit, when WW II broke out, he tried to enlist in the Army Air Corps but was rejected on instructions from the White House.
• 1945 – World War II: British troops liberate Mandalay, Burma.
• 1945 – World War II: Operation Carthage – British planes bomb Gestapo headquarters in Copenhagen, Denmark. Unfortunately they also hit a school; 125 civilians are killed.
• 1963 – Alcatraz, a federal penitentiary on an island in San Francisco Bay, closes.
• 1965 – Ranger program: NASA launches Ranger 9 which is the last in a series of unmanned lunar space probes.
• 1965 – Martin Luther King Jr leads 3,200 people on the start of the third and finally successful civil rights march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama.
