Jerry Meekins, 76, of Clearwater, Fla. bought a Spirit Airlines ticket last month to visit his daughter in Atlantic City before she had surgery. Meeks then discovered he has terminal esophageal cancer which has rendered his immune system too ravaged for travel. He asked Spirit if he could get a refund because he knew he would never be able to use the ticket. He received an emphatic “no”. He then asked if his daughter could use the ticket to visit him in Clearwater. That provoked a more emphatic “no” as well as a public lecture from Spirit on how important it is for the company to maintain consistency on it’s ‘no refund’ policy.

Meeks describes his predicament to Fox & Friends:

Spirit Airlines treatment of Jerry Meek, a brave, honorable and loyal man, who not only fought for our country as well as fighting for his life is inhumane and disgusting. Certainly your PR department knows that the almighty dollar is not worth the price of negative public relations campaigns. This is not an honorable company that I would ever trust to do business with. Even if Spirit were the only carrier offering the routes I needed I would go out of my way to not have to interact with you or use your service. And I will make sure those I know who travel are fully aware of your despicable actions and attitudes toward your customers, who determine the success or failure of your shoddy operation. And apparently there are millions of members of veterans’ groups and their supporters who feel exactly the same way as I do.

Spirit Airlines has taken Mr. Meeks’ money and is not delivering the service for which that money pays. This is called stealing. I will never, ever fly this airline. They can keep their “low” fares and steal from someone else.
